Dedbest Distillery announces their new Dedfest music festival

Damian Best from DedBest Distillery with festival sponsor George Rogulja from London Essence

Nick Mosley talks to local gin maker Damian Best of Dedbest Distillery near Uckfield about his forthcoming music festival.

Tell us about Dedbest Distillery?

We’re a small batch distillery set just outside Uckfield on the beautiful Crockstead Farm. Started by my friend Bob Dedman and I back in the challenging Covid times, we produce our signature Contractors lemongrass and hibiscus dry gin that is now popular across Brighton bars and shops.

You’ve been open for just over three years – how has business expanded?

Our range of products have expanded as we move into vodka and liqueurs. Our ‘GINgerbread’ liqueur in particular – a product we thought would only be popular around Christmas time but has proved to be an all year hit. We are also now working with Burgundy Wines as a wholesaler which is helping our distribution hugely.

What’s the idea behind the recently launched vodka?

Our vodka is a collaboration with Josh Harper from Pick Your Poison. It is a filtered vodka that utilises charcoal made from Sussex oak trees. Charcoal is an antioxidant; when the spirit is filtered through it, it removes impurities and creates a very smooth, creamy vodka.

Is your distribution limited to Sussex or can you find Contractors Gin elsewhere?

Our distribution in terms of bars is mostly limited to Sussex and surrounding areas. However you can order from anywhere in the UK via our website www.dedbestdistillery.com.

You’re running your first DedFest on the farm on Saturday 10 August, where did the idea for that come from?

I’ve been involved in the music industry for the best part of 20 years. Especially in and around Brighton. Having the beautiful Crockstead Fields venue on the farm at my disposal I thought I would combine my love for music and drinks, it was a no brainer.

What can people expect in terms of entertainment and food and drinks?

We have 23 live acts and DJs, alongside local food from Shibui Café, The Pizza Oven and Salt & Sea Coffee. Abyss Brewery are coming up from Lewes to provide beer and cider, and obviously DedBest Distillery will be providing further refreshment.

Tickets are £49.50 and include overnight camping at the farm for those wishing to stay over on the night of Saturday 10 August. For more details visit www.dedfest.co.uk.
